If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like a nice, relaxing book about the American West, but with an added sense that something has gone terribly wrong,” then Hell Ranch (1989) by Clifford L. Linedecker is here to oblige. Published by Futura (ISBN: 9780708847602), this is the sort of paperback that doesn’t so much invite you in as slam the saloon doors behind you and mutter, “You shouldn’t have come here.”
Linedecker is best known for true-crime and dark history, so even when he’s dealing in ranches and wide-open spaces, you can assume the romance will be brief and the grim bits will be thorough. The title alone is doing a lot of work: this is not Pleasant Ranch, not Ranch of Gentle Sunsets, but Hell Ranch — a place-name that pretty much guarantees the local welcome is going to be frosty and the backstory will feature at least one shovel.
What you get is a slice of frontier-flavoured menace: the kind of tale where isolation isn’t poetic, it’s practical. Where the landscape is vast, the neighbours are distant, and the rules are… negotiable. It’s the West, but not the tourist-board West. More the “something happened out here and people don’t like talking about it” West. If you like your history with a side of doom, or your crime with a hint of dust and daylight, this is very much in the wheelhouse.
There’s also the very specific pleasure of an 80s Futura paperback: a bit pulpy, a bit dramatic, and absolutely committed to the idea that your evening entertainment should involve danger, secrets, and a creeping sense of unease. You can practically hear the VHS whirr in the background.
Condition: Good. Which means it’s held up nicely, probably with the faint patina of having been read at least once by someone who thought, “How bad can it be?” before discovering that the answer, in this case, is: fairly bad. (In a good way. The book is meant to be bad.)
Perfect for readers who enjoy:
-
true-crime tone with a Western edge
-
grim Americana and frontier darkness
-
lurid titles that deliver on the promise
-
paperbacks that look like they should be read under a single lamp in a quiet room
Available now from Crappy Old Books, where the ranches are inexpensive, the past is suspicious, and the only safe thing is the fact you can close the cover whenever you like.
